RAISING AWARENESS AND FUNDS

The Gordon family created the BeLikeBruce platform to advocate for pancreatic cancer awareness, inspire action, and honour Bruce’s memory while helping others affected by the illness that changed their lives forever. Through BeLikeBruce, the family is committed to supporting pancreatic cancer research at the University of Saskatchewan’s Cancer Research Centre. Donations can be made to the University of Saskatchewan College of Medicine, with a note directing funds to the Bruce Gordon Memorial Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund. Every contribution helps support research and carries forward Bruce’s legacy.

Quotes

“Every Second Counts”, a phrase that people have used for many years. It can be used for many of life’s challenges. Bruce used it as a term of encouragement, particularly when giving his pep talks before races to us. Bruce was a huge supporter of ours and we will never forget these words of encouragement.

To honour Bruce and to always have his words with us, we asked him to write this phrase for us before his passing. We then took this to a tattoo artist in Penticton and had it permanently inked on our arms along with a bike….since Bruce’s other favourite phrase to say was “it’s all about the bike!”

Today, for the first time I felt so much positivity coming from this negative news. It was so clear to me that we really don’t get to pick how many years we get to have on this earth, but we do get to choose how we fill them. The theme was “Be like Bruce”. I think that phrase can mean something different to each person that knows him. To me it means to be humble and kind. To push yourself to be the best that you can be ALWAYS. Never give up because the human spirit is a powerful thing and can accomplish great things. Live every day! Do things that challenge your body and mind. Love yourself and others. Keep learning new things. Get involved and make new friends. Lead by example. Live life with integrity. I know that I will always aspire to live these qualities.

THE BE LIKE BRUCE FITNESS FESTIVAL

The Be Like Bruce Fitness Festival brought athletes together over several years through triathlon and CrossFit events, celebrating Bruce’s competitive spirit, love of fitness, and passion for community. With two triathlon distances and a variety of CrossFit WODs, there was a challenge for every ability level. Whether Bruce loved the event itself or trash-talking his friends more was always up for debate, but one thing was certain: everyone was there to have fun, push their limits, and honour his memory. The message was simple: show up, surprise yourself, race hard, and if your buddy is ahead of you, catch up and give them the gears!

We are incredibly grateful for the support, participation, and community that made these events so special over the years. While the Be Like Bruce Triathlon has come to an end, we will always cherish the memories made and the people who helped keep Bruce’s competitive spirit alive.
